History
A group of devoted and enthusiastic people of Latur, inspired by the preaching of the great saint and social reformer of 12 th century A.D. Mahatma Basweshwar ,founded “Mahatma Basweshwar Education Society” in the year 1963. Initially they started “Deshikendra Vidyalaya” to impart education to the children from all the concerns of the society. The members realized the importance and need of higher education to generate healthy, energetic and dynamic youth and opened“Mahatma Basweshwar Mahavidyalaya” in 1970 with Arts and Science faculties. The Commerce faculty was added in the year 1971. The institute started faculty of Social Work in the year 1983. Dr. Shivraj Nakade was the first principal of this college .Then he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University,Aurangabad.
Mahatma Basweshwar Mahavidyalaya was affiliated to the Marathwada University, Aurangabad at the time of establishment enlisted under 2(f) 12(B) Act of UGC. Now it is affiliated to Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded since its establishment in 1995 due to bifercation of then Marathwada University, Aurangabad. It has a mission to provide quality education as well as moral and human values to students. The motto of the Mahavidayalaya is “Dnyanmewamparamjyoti” ( i.e. The knowledge is the only eternal light) and “Kayakawe Kailas” (i.e.Work itself is heaven).
The College has succeeded in maintaining its reputation as one of the institutions, imparting quality higher education to the first learners of this region,in educating the youths of this region regarding socio-economic problems and producing the trained and skillful social workers. We shape our students not only into literate individuals but also make them disciplined and responsible citizens.We take efforts to make students well-aware of the fact that they can be useful only when they treat themselves as an integral part of the society and they indebt a lot to it.
Mahatma Basweshwar Mahavidyalaya is one of the leading institutions of higher education on account of consistent good academic results & active participations in cultural, sports activities and highly-maintained discipline .The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1995 - 96.Now it has completed 44 years. It is the only college in Marathwada region having the teaching facilities in four faculties viz.- Arts,Commerce, Science and Social Work. It is the only college in Marathwada teaching P.G. Courses in Philosophy,History,Sociology,Political Science, Geography and Mathematics. It is the college having Family Counselling Centre besides Personality Development and Career Counselling Centre. The following prominent dignitaries made their valuable visits to the college and also provided guidance on various occasions. These are Hon.B.D. Jatti, Hon.Y.B. The college received the “Best Examination Centre Award” in 1997 -1998 by the Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded.
